Courier firm G4S Courier has supported the push by the industry’s regulator, Communications Commission of Kenya’s (CCK) new regulation requiring courier companies to contribute 0.5 per cent of their annual turnover towards a postal Universal Service Fund (USF).
The postal fund is a requirement of the law having been created under the Kenya Communications Amendment Act, 2009, part VI B.
The Act requires all private courier service providers to donate part of their annual gross turnover to this centralized fund, to help the government introduce postal/courier services in rural areas where most private operators have shied away.
According to Rogers Sultani; G4S Courier Services Director, G4S supports this move and is an important step in improving service delivery to the underserved markets especially in rural areas, which most courier companies have ignored because of their low returns.
“Through economies of scale, market players in the courier industry will in the long-term benefit from this new directive by CCK,” said Sultani.
Other players in the courier sector have moved to court to stop the implementation of the directive which affects both local and international courier service providers.
Currently, there are over 150 registered courier service providers in the country with most of them offering mail and light parcel delivery. However, most of these providers risk being deregistered following CCK’s move to reign-in those providers who have not met the courier services standards.
