ICANN56 meeting won’t be held in Panama over Zika virus fears, new venue being sought

CThe ICANN board has announced that its ICANN56 meeting, which had been earlier scheduled to take place in Panama City, Panama will now have to be moved to a different location due to fears over the Zika virus.

The ICANN56 Policy Forum was meant to take place in Panama City from June 27 – 30.

A brief announcement on the ICANN website titled “ICANN56 to be Relocated” states: “ICANN56, scheduled to be held in Panama in June 2016, will be moved to another location due to the severity of the Zika Virus outbreak in the Latin America region. A search is currently underway to identify an alternate location where the Zika Virus is not a concern. We look forward to returning to Panama for a future ICANN Meeting.”

Panama City was to host the ICANN56 after the ICANN55 meeting in Marrakech, Morocco  in March this year.

A similar decision to move a meeting from one country to another was made by the ICANN board in early November 2014 when it announced that the ICANN52 meeting which was scheduled to take place in Marrakech, Morocco in February 2015 had been moved to Singapore over Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
