ZTE to construct Ethio Telecom’s backbone transmission network

China’s ZTE Corporation has announced that is has been selected by Ethio Telecom to construct its 100G dense wavelength division multiplexing optical transport network (DWDM/OTN) backbone transmission network in the western and southern regions of Ethopia. The 100G DWDM/OTN transmission backbone network will enable faster network transmission by increasing capacity 10-fold and help Ethio Telecom develop 3G, LTE and broadband services.

Ethio Telecom is an integrated telecommunication service provider in Ethiopia, providing fixed-line, mobile and Internet services. With rapid development of 2G, 3G, LTE, fixed-line voice and broadband services, Ethio Telecom needs to deploy a large-capacity national transmission backbone network to meet high-bandwidth transmission requirements.

ZTE’s solution is based on 100G DWDM/OTN network, integrating intelligent WASON (WDM automatic switch optical network) and adopting industry-leading polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PM-QPSK) modulation, coherent reception and software decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) key technologies. The transmission backbone network will be built to achieve a large-capacity OTN cross, optical network intelligent scheduling and ultra-long distance transmission, helping Ethio telecom respond to the development and evolution of future business. ZTE gained 50 percent of the market share for the optical network, which consolidates it position as leader in the Ethiopian optical network market.

“ZTE is committed to the development of telecommunications in Ethiopia, promising to provide customers with the best solutions and services. As a strategic partner of Ethio telecom, ZTE will jointly promote the progress of the Ethiopian telecommunications market,” stated ZTE in a media release.
