Airtel Uganda subscribers now the choice to either perform their mobile money transactions from their devices’ SIM money or android mobile app.
The Airtel Money app enables subscribers to send money, buy airtime and internet bundles, make bill payments for utilities and payTV services, do mobile banking as well as buy goods and pay for various services.
The mobile app, targeted at susbcribers with android smart devices, has been developed by Namek Solutions.
Airtel Uganda subscribers with feature phones can however still access Airtel Money services from their phones’ SIM menu.
Although there are no official figures from Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), various estimates state that smartphone penetration is still low in Uganda, with just 13 out of every 100 people having the devices.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Airtel Uganda had 18 million subscribers (a third of the country’s total susbcriber base) at the end of 2015.
In terms of mobile money, Airtel Money has an estimated 4 million susbcribers.
