‘Oulu from Above’ wins 5GFWD contest, pockets €10,000 grand prize

The first edition of 5GFWD has been concluded at Oulu Midnight Pitch Fest. The 5GFWD grand prize of 10,000 went to “Oulu from Above – Intelligent Drone Network for Experiencing and Sharing Experiences”, which had won the Easy Living & Working! category earlier. Four innovations, each having won their own category, battled for the grand prize of the 5GFWD competition.

According to the jury, the final battle between two contestants was a tight one. Each track’s winners had the elements to compete for the Grand Prix nomination. In the end, the jury found the nomination to boil down to true utilization of 5G’s possibilities in the development of the winning innovation, as well as its potential for commercial success.

The winning proposal, ”Oulu from Above”, is an intelligent network consisting of flying camera drones that can offer entertainment and benefit for the citizens of Oulu and tourists alike. In addition to entertaining, the network can warn about traffic congestion and accidents. Viitala, the inventor behind the winning idea, was thrilled about his victory, and made a point about how wonderful and fascinating start-up ideas he had heard during the Midnight Pitch Fest.

“The competition was not about finding complete and ready-made technical solutions, but rather innovations for 5G that are viable to implement and have the potential for business. We were able to nominate a winner that clearly met the criteria. The winning proposal utilized current solutions, which were scaled towards 5G’s potential while making hard-to-grasp technology more easily visualized. All in all, we can say the competition has strengthened Oulu’s position as one of the world’s leading 5G development environments,” states 5GFWD jury member, 6Aika’s project manager Heikki Huhmo.

The competition received over 100 proposals from all over the world. The winners of the four categories were:
