Chinese cellphone manufacturer Gionee has launched an entry-level smartphone in Kenya. The Gionee Pioneer 5W,known as the P5W, is a low priced smartphone targeted at the middle and
low-end of the market.
The phone is retailing at Kshs 9,000 on Kilimall online shopping mall. Speaking during the launch in Nairobi, Gionee Kenya GM Eric Ai said the company targets to sell 100,000 units this year, noting that there is growing demand in Kenya in this category.

He said the P5W launch will be followed by F103 Pro also targeted at young people and the middle market and its high end Gionee S6 for businesspeople.
Gionee is among the top smartphone brands in China and ranked among top 10 worldwide with 30 million handsets sold in 2015 according to a Strategy Analytics first quarter report. Gionee has a huge market share in India, where it sells 600,000 units monthly. It is also making inroads in Nigeria with about 300,000 handsets sold in the West African country.
The dual SIM-card P5w smartphone sports a 5-megapixel main camera with autofocus and LED flash. It has a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter capable of taking images up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. It comes in a range of 5 colours – black, blue, yellow, white and red. There’s a limited
gold-coloured model as well.
Other features the Gionee P5w offers include 3G Network support, dual-SIM slots, USB OTG support, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS/A-GPS, and microUSB v2.0. It measures a body dimension of 143.3 x 72 x 8.9 mm (5.64 x 2.83 x 0.35 in) and weighs 153 grams.
The Gionee P5w smartphone is currently on sale in Kenya at a 20 percent discount. It is available in white, black, yellow, blue, and red colour.
