Redhouse signs up OPPO Mobile, as Aktivate PR snatches ICT Authority account from PMS Group

Redhouse Group has signed up the OPPO Mobile account which was until recently being handled from within the firm by an in-house PR team.

Redhouse Group’s subsidiary Mediaedge Public Relations was in charge of media relations during this week’s launch of OPPO’s new model – OPPO F3.

A PR executive at OPPO Mobile confirmed that they had outsourced PR services to Mediaedge, adding that they will henceforth be working with the firm thought the in-house unit would still be in place.

How OPPO Mobile got signed up by Mediaedge has led to some questions however. Mediaedge already handles two other mobile handset vendors – that is Huawei Mobile (which it signed in early March this year from Tell-Em PR) and LG Electronics. Huawei’s Corporate PR needs are however being taken care of by Oxygene.

Most clients would not be comfortable working with an agency which is already representing a rival brand and in Mediaedge’s case, it is not just one client but two.

Away from Mediaedge, Homeboyz Radio’s PR unit – Aktivate PR – has also added a new client to its portfolio. Aktivate PR signed up the ICT Authority from PMS Group. But even with the departure of ICT Authority, PMS can take solace in the fact that it still retains IFMIS and Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) as tech-related clients.

The knowledge that the ICT Authority account has been signed by a new agency  will make both journalists and bloggers heave a sigh of relief as PMS Group had become notorious for sending invites just a few hours to their events or sending the same at unusual hours.

For instance, the invite below was shared on a media and bloggers’ Whatsapp group by a PMS Group exec at 10pm on Thursday night (while the event was scheduled for the following morning at 7.30pm, out of the CBD).

Asked if he really expected people to attend the event in the morning after sharing the event so late in the night, the PMS did not bother to respond.

Let’s hope this will change with the departure of the account to Aktivate PR whose first major assignment for the client was media coordination during this year’s Connected Summit in Kwale County.

Apart from ICT Authority, Aktivate’s other ICT client is IT security firm ESET.
