Social media enthusiasts can now vote for their preferred individuals and organizations that have used the digital space to positively impact the society following the release of the OLX SoMA 2016 nominees list.
The list, which cuts across the political, social and economic spheres, features some of the best known corporate brands, media personalities and public figures in government, politics and sports circles.

The Awards Gala for the OLX SoMA 2017 will be held on June 23rd. The theme of the influential Awards which is now in its fifth year is Celebrating Five Years of Impact and the sponsors are online classifieds service, OLX Kenya, Deloitte and Expose.
The annual Awards are used to recognize and reward individuals who have made good use of social media to positively impact society.
Previous winners who will be the first crop of SoMA alumni to be lunched at the Awards Gala include telecommunication giant Safaricom, Daniel Ndambuki of the popular TV comedy show, Churchill Live show, Citizen TV Kenya, Afro-Pop band Sauti Sol and human rights activist Boniface Mwangi.
OLX SoMA founder and Director, Mr. Martin Muli said the corporations and individuals, who have all won more than four trophies since the inception of the Awards have shown relentless advancement in their use of social media over the years for a good course at a personal and business level.
“These exceptional social media performers will have a crucial role in influencing the view as well as use of social media in Kenya,” said Muli.
He also disclosed this year’s nomination process saw increased participation by women, especially in the media and fashion categories.
Muli attributed the high number of women nominated to realization by the gender that social media has abundant opportunities for career growth, job creation and economic empowerment.
Said Muli: “Women have been lagging behind when it comes to exploiting social media opportunities for advancement but this is fast changing and soon the digital gender gap will be bridged”.
He, however, lauded entertainment, media, business sectors for recognizing the value of social media in building brands and driving business opportunities.
OLX Kenya country manager, Peter Ndiangu’i, noted expressed confidence that social media enthusiasts will support the nominees by voting to validate their work and influence in the digital space.
“This is a public process which involves nomination, shortlisting by judges and voting by the Online community. The public vote will give winners influence and respect and opportunity to up their rate card,” said Ndiang’ui.
Deloitte, the quality assurance partner, assured social media users that the voting process will be transparent and urged them to vote in huge numbers to ensure the results reflect the developments witnessed in the digital landscape in recent times.
