Huawei outlines sustainability initiatives and achievements in 2016 report




Huawei Technologies has released its sustainability report which outlines the company’s achievements in sustainable development, strategy implementation and business practices for 2016.

The report which is titled ‘Connecting the Future’ was launched at the end of June 2017; and tracks the progress of the company in the various markets as far as sustainability projects go.

Speaking during the release of the report, Huawei’s chairwoman Madam Sun Yafang re-affirmed the company’s commitment towards sustainable growth and corporate social responsibility.

“We will ensure that our company’s strategic goals are aligned with the long term goals of the society as a whole; we are committed to sustainable value creation, and we will not sacrifice long term economic prosperity and social welfare for our own short term interest”, said Sun.

The report highlights Huawei’s approach and performance in various areas such as bridging the digital divide, supporting network stability and security, promoting environmental protection and building a healthy industry in the past year.

Huawei explains in the report how as a company it is uniquely placed to utilize its technology solutions to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, and investments in R&D of more than US $11 billion to enable it develop solutions for smarter public safety, education, health, transport and much more as well as communications networks and devices that use less energy. Huawei is also committed to operating ethically at all times, ensuring the safety and security of its products, providing opportunities for employee development, and supporting community development and ICT skills worldwide. Huawei has built and supports more than 1,500 networks worldwide that connect more than 3 billion people.

Kenya, as one of the markets in which Huawei Technologies operates, has also enjoyed some of the benefits from Huawei’s sustainability strategy through initiatives such as; the Smart Healthcare project which helped deliver smart medical solutions to 200,000 people in Lamu County in 2016 and the Seeds for The Future Programme which saw over 1,000 university students from 96 countries get an opportunity to receive ICT training in China, in 2016 alone.

Huawei Technologies is looking to expand its areas of focus in terms of their sustainability priorities as announced by Kevin Tao, chairman of Huawei’s Corporate Sustainable Development committee.

“We will focus on innovation in sustainable development and also risk control so that we can build competitiveness in sustainability. We will integrate sustainability further into our business operations to create greater value for our business”, said Tao.

The company has also committed to ensuring that they maintain fact-based external relations to ensure that they build trust with the stakeholders, and in the long run build a robust ecosystem for the company to sustain its long term development according to the report.
