Showmax, DStv Digital mull over possible merger, creation of new digital unit in Africa

MultiChoice staff in South Africa were early this month informed – through an internal memo – that Showmax Africa is set to merge operations with DStv Digital Media, a move that will result in the creation of a new digital division.

According to media reports, the new division has not been named, but will be overseen by MultiChoice CEO Mark Rayner until a division head is found.

Even with the impending organisational changes, Graeme Cumming is still GM for DStv Digital Media while Chris Savides still holds forte as head of Showmax Africa.

“Employees will report to Rayner for now, and the division head will report to Imtiaz Patel – the CEO of video entertainment at Naspers… Outside Africa, Showmax will operate independently under John Kotsaftis,” reported MyBroadband.

In August, the same publication reported that the process of integrating Showmax into DStv had began according to interviews with industry sources. This is aimed at ensuring that Showmax video services become available on DStv’s digital platforms before eventual bundling of Showmax with DStv packages for subscribers.

Officially however, both Multichoice and Showmax have remained tight-lipped about a possible merger, with one Showmax representative only offering that they’re “looking at ways to work more closely with DStv.”

Showmax – the latest addition to the Naspers’ stable – was launched in mid 2015 and currently has operations in South Africa, Kenya, UAE, Netherlands, Czech Republic and Poland.
