LG Electronics has been awarded for its energy conservation and environmental sustainability efforts at the 2011 Energy Management Awards (EMA) presided over by Kenya’s energy minister Kiraitu Murungi.
The LG Air Conditioning Academy was recognized under the ‘Green Buildings’ Category at the awards held in Nairobi on Friday last week.
This is the first time that the Energy Management Awards is recognizing Green Buildings in a drive to encourage organizations to invest in environment friendly buildings.
“This award is a great achievement and a timely recognition for our continuing efforts to entrench green technology practices. LG will continue to invest in innovations that guarantee environmental protection,” said Mr Jung Jin Kim, LG’s East and Central Africa managing director.
The LG Air Conditioning Academy employs the latest energy management technology by among other things, using solar power to back up electricity and use of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting which consumes 50 per cent less power compared to Halogen lighting.

The academy also uses Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) technology in Air Conditioning systems which offer 34 per cent less energy with Inverter Technology compared to Conventional Air Conditioners, efficiency and green technology and use of R-410A gas which does not deplete the Ozone layer.
The Other buildings recognized under this category include UNEP Gigiri Office, New Standard Chartered Bank, Coca Cola regional Office and the Karen Green office.
LG’s Air Conditioning Academy in Nairobi is a multi-million investment which offers free trainings to high quality personnel (Customers, Consultants, Contractors, Architects etc.) and equipping them with latest technology trends in air conditioning.
The Energy Management Awards was launched in 2004 as collaboration between the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Global Environmental Facility and the Government of Kenya.
The awards gala is an annual forum where stakeholders in the energy sector converge to recognize excellence in Energy Management.
Research shows that organizations that have adopted prudent energy management systems have saved greatly on costs of doing business and increased their competitive edge. Such companies have ultimately played a pivotal role in conserving the environment by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emission.
