Essar Telecom Kenya’s (ETK) yuMobile has unveiled a new day and night calling offer that will see its subscribers enjoy extended talk time all day and night, allowing the network’s subscribers who already enjoy free on-net calls all day to now extend this to night chat for Kshs 3 extra.
The free calls are available as default and on a pay-as-you-use model which means customers who are not making yu-yu calls during day (6.00am – 6.00pm) or night (10.00pm – 6.00am) will not be charged.
“yuMobile remains committed to responding to customers’ needs and giving them best value for their money. We are now giving our subscribers a product that allows them to enjoy the most affordable calling rates all day and night in line with our low cost model. We believe in this model and intend to keep subscriber acquisition and maintenance costs at the bare minimum as we pass on the savings to our customers,” said yuMobile Kenya country manager Madhur Taneja.
Taneja dismissed the notion that low cost calling model is not sustainable challenging mobile firms to share passive infrastructure such as the tower and generators to reduce costs.
“If the country’s telecommunication firms decided to share infrastructure, this would result in massive savings which would then translate into lower billing rates that can still deliver strong profits,” said Taneja.
ETK’s yuMobile is Kenya’s fourth mobile cellular network and was launched in December, 2008. yuMobile achieved the fastest network rollout speed in the region, by achieving countrywide coverage in approximately 10 months from launch. Currently, the network has a subscriber base of over 2.3 million subscribers and offers subscribers competitive call rates.
The network has several innovative product and service offerings including yuCash, a mobile money transfer service; eneza electronic airtime top-up service; Dunda, a caller ring-back tone service and yuNet data packages.
