MultiChoice Kenya, through SuperSport, has announced Kshs 8.5 million sponsorship to this year’s Safaricom Sevens rugby tournament that kicks off on September 21 at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
The sponsorship will comprise a Kshs 1 million cash donation and Kshs 7.5 million in production costs for the 3-day event.
SuperSport also announced that the 14th edition of the Safaricom 7s would be broadcast using state-of-the-art technology Outside Broadcast Unit to ensure the broadcasting of top quality live sport in East Africa.
The new unit is equipped with 10 HD cameras, one HD SuperSlo camera, two Goal Cams (for in-goal action), two sixchannel EVS machines for slow motion from every angle and surround sound capability, which all comprise Kshs 500 million outlay.
Andre Venter, SuperSport’s Africa head said that the main strategy is “an investment in world class facilities to enable the production of world class content” adding that all technology for East Africa is based in Kenya, making Kenya the regional hub.
SuperSport’s investments to date include two Standard Definition OB vans, one High Definition OB van and one smaller six-camera HD OB van (to arrive in the first quarter of 2013), which all cost a total of Kshs 1 billion. Other investments include a studio facility, a four-camera HD drama facility (from November), four-camera presentation studios (also in November) and post-production facilities. The total value of the studio complex and facilities is Kshs 600 million.
