Here is Distimo’s review of the best performing applications over June 2013 in terms of free downloads, paid downloads and most revenue globally aggregated. In the past months, Distimo focused only on the two major stores, the Apple App Store and Google Play. This month, the five most popular paid and free applications in the Amazon App Store are added to this monthly blog.
For those of you interested in data about the most popular free, paid and grossing applications on daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly levels, Distimo’s leaderboards are a great resource for further research. These leaderboards list applications and publishers per country and per category for all major application stores including the Apple App Store (iPhone/iPad), Google Play and Amazon App Store. Enriching the data from the monthly leaderboards across all countries with Distimo AppIQ data allows us to analyze the most successful apps worldwide, as presented in this blog post.
Top Free Applications
In June, Candy Crush Saga has lost the title of most downloaded free application in the Apple App Store to Despicable Me: Minion Rush. Although this game by Gameloft was released in the second week of June it was still able to gather more downloads and took over the number one position in terms of free downloads. The three applications that completed this month’s top five were new in the top spots as well. Publisher Gameloft seemed to have the momentum in the Apple App Store by having two free applications in the top five in June. Vine ranked fourth and was the only non-game application in the top 5 most downloaded applications in the Apple App Store. Vine reached its peak on June 15 with more than 300,000 downloads globally that day. The top charts for Google Play in June shows similar titles as in May. Only the order has changed. Candy Crush Saga went up by two ranks and held the third top spot in June in terms of most downloaded free application in Google Play globally. Facebook and WhatsApp Messenger were still the most downloaded free applications in Google Play.
In the Amazon App Store, Crazy Dentist by 6677g was the most downloaded free application in June. TETRIS® Blitz (Kindle Tablet Edition) by EA ranked second and Hill Climb Racing by Fingersoft followed on the third place. A second application published by 6677g made it to the top five as well; Little Dentist ? kids games. And Princess Salon (Kindle Tablet Edition) by LiBii completed the top five. This beauty queen was the largest climber in the Amazon App Store compared to May.
Top Paid Applications
Not much has changed in the top paid chart for the Apple App Store and Google Play compared to May. In the Apple App Store, Minecraft and Heads Up! switched positions and SpongeBob Moves In entered the top five most downloaded paid applications as a newcomer. The top three paid applications in Google Play did not change at all in June. The only change in this top five was the position switch of Nova Launcher Prime (4) and Poweramp Full Version Unlocker (5). Among all applications listed in the top five most downloaded applications in the Apple App Store and Google Play, only two applications engage in price strategies. The price of SpongeBob Moves In increased from $1.99 to $3.99 in the Apple App Store and Swiftkey Keyboard was put on sale in Google Play at the end of June.
In the Amazon App Store, Minecraft – Pocket Edition was the most downloaded paid application in June. With presence in all the top lists for paid applications in each store, Minecraft has been one of the most successful paid applications across stores. Dentist Office Kids by Beansprites LLC was the second most popular paid application in June and was followed by Plants vs. Zombies (Kindle Tablet Edition)(3), Scribblenauts Remix (4) and Temple Run: Brave (5).
Most Revenue Generating Applications
With the exception of one app, the top five most grossing remained the same as previous period in the Apple App Store. Minecraft entered the top five in June at the expense of The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth, which was ranked at the 7th position in the top grossing in June. Minecraft has already been one of the most revenue generating apps in the Apple App Store for a long time. In June, the game generated globally 19% more revenue than in May. Candy Crush Saga already overtook Clash of Clans last month, and now in June, it even generated most revenue of all apps. The total generated revenue in June remained close to that of Clash of Clans though. Zooming in on Clash of Clans, this game published by Supercell generated more revenue than Puzzle & Dragons in June globally. The success of Clash of Clans reached the important Japanese market at the end of June 2013. Main contributors to this were a cross promotion action with Puzzle & Dragons in the beginning of June and adding the Japanese language to the game on June 17. Both events resulted in an increase of the revenue for Clash of Clans in Japan (see screenshot taken from Distimo AppIQ below). The revenue of Clash of Clans more than tripled in June compared to May in Japan. During the first six days of July, Clash of Clans already generated 61% of the total revenue it generated in June in Japan. These developments might have a great impact on the global top grossing apps of next month.
In Google Play, Candy Crush Saga increased three spots and was the second most revenue generating app globally in June. It generated 22% more revenue in June than in May. LINE stayed in the top grossing chart at the third spot. Two new apps, both linked to Kakao, entered the top five in June: 쿠키런 for Kakao, 마구마구2013 for Kakao. The vast majority of the revenue of these apps is generated in Korea.
This blog includes only data that is available in AppIQ. Alongside the support of the Apple App Store and Google Play in AppIQ, daily downloads for applications in the Amazon App Store are available in AppIQ as well.
