Kenya’s 4 mobile service providers join the Westgate relief efforts




WeR1As Kenya grapples with loss and destruction arising from the Saturday September 21 terror attack at Nairobi’s Westgate Mall, the country’s four mobile operators – Orange; Safaricom; Airtel and yuMobile – have all joined in the relief efforts by setting up toll-free short codes for cash donations.

Safaricom was the first to set up an M-Pesa number followed by Airtel Kenya (via Airtel Money); Orange through Orange Money and now yuMoble through its yuCash mobile money transfer solution.

Cash Contribution Details /  Procedure

 

 

Safaricom

–          Customers are required to get on to the M-PESA menu, then go to PayBill.

–          Under the business number enter 848484 and account number 848484 – and follow subsequent prompts to enter the amount and send.

–          The PayBill number 848484 is for the initiative and has been specifically set up to help raise funds for medical and related costs for those affected by the Westgate Mall incident.

–          The PayBill number is zero rated and those sending do not incur any costs.

–          The entire amount raised through the kitty will be channeled through the Kenya Red Cross which is coordinating matters relating to the welfare of those affected.

 

Orange

–          For the purpose of this campaign – that is raising money in support of victims of the Westgate siege – the Bill Reference is “Westgate”

–          Process:

  • Select “Orange Money
  • Select “Payments
  • Select “Pay Bill
  • Enter Business Number” {222222}
  • Enter Bill Reference” {Westgate}
  • Enter Amount” {XXXX}
  • Enter PIN
  • Confirm

–          An SMS confirming payment will be sent to the customer.

–          Regular updates on the contributions will be disseminated to the public.

–          Orange also provides internet connectivity to Kenya Red Cross crisis centres in Nairobi coordinating both rescue operations and blood donations. The centres are situated at the Visa Oshwal Centre as well as Aga Khan and MP Shah hospitals in Nairobi

 

Airtel Kenya

–          The steps for donations through the Airtel Money pay bill are as follows:

  • Go to Airtel Money menu and select Paybill.
  • Select “Other” then type in Redcross  (one word with no space in between)as the business code.
  • Put in amount you would like to donate followed by your PIN
  • Finally, type in “Westgate” as the reference

–          Airtel Kenya also set up a wi-fi and call center at the blood donation operations by the Kenya Red Cross at Uhuru Park, offering blood donors the opportunity to make phone calls to their loved ones and ensure that they can keep track of their whereabouts and access the internet for news and social media updates at no charge.

 

yuMobile

–           yuMobile  subscribers can send their contributions and donations via yuCash through  pay bill No.  200140. Details as below:-

a)      dial *626#

b)      Enter  Pay-bill No :  200140

c)       Enter account no : 1

d)      Enter the Amount

e)      Enter pin and confirm
