Vodacom Tanzania has for the first time in its history won the top TRA 2012/2013 national compliant taxpayer award in the telecommunications sector.
Vodacom emerged third in the overall category with Tanzania Breweries Limited and Tanzania Cigarette Company taking first and second place respectively.
Vodacom Tanzania Rene Meza said the firm has invested in excess of Tshs 1.5 Trillion in Tanzania and is now seeing its investment bearing fruit thus enabling the mobile phone company to increase its contribution to government revenue significantly.
“In the first six months of our financial year, that is from April to September 2013, we paid Tshs 29.3 billion in Corporate Tax. This is an increase of over 86 per cent of the Tshs15.7 billion that we paid over the same period in 2012. We also collected Tshs 110.5 billion in VAT, Excise Duty and other taxes on behalf of the government,” said Meza.
Last year, Vodacom paid Tshs 39.9 billion in Corporate Tax. In addition, the company collected over Tshs 190 billion in VAT, Excise Duty and other taxes and duties which it paid to the government.
