LG Electronics unveils foldable screen technology for OLED TV production




CLG Electronics have unveiled the first ever foldable 18 –inch display. The paper-thin product was announced by the Korean giant in the recently concluded CES technology show that took place in Vegas.

While LG is yet to divulge the details of the new technology, experts suggest the technology could soon be used on smartphones and in-car screens that curve around a vehicle’s interior.

Commenting on the TV-like display, Moses Marji , General Marketing Managing E.A said: “As a business we are always keen on delivering innovative products that are able to keep up with the ever evolving technological trends- With this foldable display, we are expanding the OLED technology.” The future-proof system which uses a magnetic mat is aimed at smaller next-gen devices that can benefit from the bendability like automotive displays, cellphones and wearables.

The head of LG Display’s OLED business unit, Sang-Deog Yeo, said “OLED represents a responsive and groundbreaking technology’ not only for the company, but also for the industry” The Intuitive Technology will mean even much slimmer TV sets since the screen emits light itself without a backlight unit, unlike the liquid crystal display (LCD).

The company said its display strategy will center on OLED technology – even though manufacturers have struggled to mass produce the more complex sets. LG vowed to ramp up OLED production from the third quarter of this year to a substantial level that can meet clients’ demand. The company also recently unveiled OLED TV models G6 and E6.

The new models feature the Ultra HD Premium seal of recognition from the UHD Alliance for meeting the demanding standards set by the industry organization for resolution, high dynamic range, peak luminance, black levels, wide colour gamut and audio quality, among other criteria. The G6 and E6 are the first TVs from LG to feature the company’s unique Picture-On-Glass design, which boast an ultra-thin 2.57mm OLED panel with a translucent glass back and forward-facing sound bar speaker system.

By focusing on smart technology directly related to picture and sound quality, both the G6 and E6 represent a whole new level of consumer-centric home entertainment innovation. The new TV line-up thrives on compatibility supports the industry-standard HDR formats established by the world’s leading broadcasters, film studios and consumer electronics manufacturers such as HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
