Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Technology, Adebayo Shittu, recently suspended the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Peter jack, over allegations of illegal employments and procurement at the agency.

The minister also appointed NITDA’s Director of Corporate Strategy and Research Dr Vincent Olatunji, to replace Peter Jack in an acting capacity.

According to an article in the Vanguard, Peter Jack’s suspension “became imperative on the strength of deluge of petitions regarding several alleged wrong doings in NITDA and subsequent preliminary findings of an Investigative Committee set up by the Ministry.”

“Some of the infractions identified by the investigative committee made up of three senior ministry officials include unauthorized and illegal recruitment of additional staff totaling 245 within a spate of seven months,” stated the article.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) was established to create a framework for the planning, research, development, standardization, application, coordination, monitoring, evaluation and regulation of Information Technology practices, activities and systems in Nigeria.

Its role therefore is to develop Information technology in the country through regulatory standards, guidelines and policies. Additionally, NITDA is the clearing house for all IT projects and infrastructure development in the country. It is the prime Agency for e-government implementation, Internet governance and general IT development in Nigeria.
