Kenya’s ICT survey on enterprises, public institutions to cost Kshs 64 million

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) have launched the country’s first-ever National ICT survey targeting business enterprises and public institutions.

The survey seeks to measure access to and use of information and communication technologies in business enterprises and the public sector with the data collected expected to be a useful tool for policy makers, investors, academia and business leaders on the current uptake of ICTs in Kenya.

Speaking during the launch, the CA Director General, Francis Wangusi said ICTs are a crucial catalyst in socio-economic development. “For this reason, as policy makers, implementers and stakeholders in general, we need to have accurate data and statistics in order to plan for the future of the sector,” said Mr Wangusi.

CA chairman Mr Ngene Gituku noted that accurate ICT data is essential in the Authority’s regulatory interventions, adding that such data could only be realized through regular collaborative research with the national statistical office that is mandated to collect and analyze data from various market sectors in the country.

The KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi said that the information collected from the survey would be preserved for national prosperity. He noted that it was the first time such a survey was being conducted in the country.

The survey, which is expected to run for a period of 50 days, is scheduled to kick off next week, with preliminary results expected by June this year.

The survey will cost Kshs 64 million, with the Authority contributing Kshs 13 million while KNBS will inject Kshs 51 million. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will offer technical assistance during the survey.
