Egypt is set to host Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-16), billed as the world’s pre-eminent gathering of the global ICT regulatory community. The meeting will take place from May 11 -14 at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
The meeting, to be hosted by the Government of Egypt, will feature world-class speakers with a dynamic programme focused around the theme of ‘Be Empowered, Be Included: Building Blocks for Smart Societies in a Connected World’.
The symposium will be chaired by Mostafa Abd El-Wahed, Acting Chairman of the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA).
The GSR-18 is expected to be attended by regulatory agency leaders and top government policy makers from around the world to debate the challenges and opportunities around promoting greater digital inclusion.
Leaders from the global regulatory community, industry bodies and the private sector, including ITU Secretary-General Mr Houlin Zhao, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, Mr Brahima Sanou, and other leading dignitaries are also expected to attend.
Among the agenda items in this year’s programme are Artificial intelligence, smart sensors & smart networks; Digital financial inclusion – the challenges of bringing the unbanked online; The regulatory road towards the ‘Internet of Things’ and M2M communications; New digital platforms – empowering or enslaving?; Privacy, trust and cyber-security and Strategies to encouraging digital entrepreneurship.
On May 14, the GSR-16 will be two parallel tracks, a Regulators’ track, open only to regulators and policy makers, and an Industry track, open to ITU-D sector members, in addition to the final closing ceremony open to all participants.
