The African Virtual University (AVU), in its effort to address the human capital gap required to sustain socio-economic development, is organizing a Teacher Education Program workshop with 12 African universities. A total of 34 participants will attend the content development workshop to be held from March 21 – 25, 2016 at the Nairobi Safari Club in Nairobi, Kenya.
A total of four (4) ICT-integrated Bachelor of Education in Math and Science were developed and implemented through the AVU Multinational Phase I Project (2005 – 2010), by 12 universities drawn from 10 countries. This Program comprised of 73 modules of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, ICT Basic Skills, ICT Integration in Education; and Education Professional Courses. The 73 modules are available in three languages Portuguese, French & English), culminating in a total of 219 modules released as AVU Open Education Resources.
The AVU Multinational Phase II Project (2012 – 2016) seeks to: revise the modules developed in Phase I and develop new modules as may be necessary; increase the number of institutions participating in the program; and consolidate the gains of the Phase 1 program by undertaking activities of the Teacher Education Virtual Consortium. The Participating Institutions in the second phase include: Institut des sciences de Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, Institut Supérieur Pédagogique de Gombe in DRC, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Bamako in Mali, Universidade de Cabo Verde and Instituto Universitário da Educação in Cape Verde, , Escola Normal Superior Tchico Té in Guinea Bissau, University of Education Winneba in Ghana, University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria, Open University of Sudan in Sudan, University of Juba in South Sudan, Universite Abdou Moumouni in Niger and The University of the Gambia in The Gambia.
The Program’s implementation has 5 main activities: policy harmonization and curriculum contextualization, quality assurance, curriculum mapping and revision, content review and/or development, and program delivery. Having accomplished the first three steps of namely: Policy Harmonization and Curriculum Contextualization in a workshop held in July 2012, Curriculum Review and Mapping in a workshop held in May 2013, and quality assurance (workshop held in 2014), the AVU is in the process reviewing the content of the 73 modules developed in Phase 1 and the development of 10 new modules.
The participants will include lecturers, writing and reviewing the content for a collaborative development of a Teacher Education Program that will be released in text, CDs and other devices as Open Educational Resources on AVU’s platform allowing anyone and any institution to use them freely. The program will be delivered in 12 African countries using the Open Distance and eLearning centers installed by the AVU in the framework of the AVU Multinational Support Project II, which is being implemented in 27 universities and 21 countries spread across Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone African countries. The project, which will be finalized at the end of 2016, has several components including Teacher Education, Computer Science, Peace Management and Conflict Resolution, Open Distance and eLearning Professional Development, establishment of Open Distance and eLearning centers, Research and Development and Gender Mainstreaming.
The reviewed and new textbooks will be interactive and will integrate videos for better engagement with learners. So far, AVU’s OERs have been visited by more than 2 million people in more than 200 countries since 2010.
