Telegram has released the new version of the instant messaging platform which now allows members to have up to 5,000 people in a group, up from the previous 1,000.
“Telegram is famous for its awesome group chats. Today’s update makes them even more awesome. To begin with, we’re increasing the number of people who can join a ‘supergroup’ from 1000 to 5000 members. That’s 5 times as good,” the firm stated in blog post.
As part of the changes, groups of any size can now be converted to supergroups while group admins can also make the groups public by setting up a public link, allowing anyone to view the chat and join.
Admins can also pin messages to keep important updates visible and notify all members and further select messages to delete, report as spam, block users, or remove all messages from a user.
“Supergroup admins can now inform all members about important news using pinned messages. Pinned messages are displayed at the top of the chat screen. All members will get a notification — even if they muted ordinary messages from the group… This way, anybody can view the group’s entire chat history and join to post messages,” added the blog post published on March 13, 2016.
Telegram’s public groups feature is currently available in Europe and America, but yet to go live in other parts of the world.
Whatsapp, the other instant messaging platform with group chat feature, currently has a maximum number of 256 people per group which increased from the previous 100.
In February this year, Telegram – which works in mobile and web – reported that its user numbers had grown to 100 million with 15 billion messages (or Telegrams) being delivered daily.
