Even as one of its affiliated taxis was being torched in Nairobi’s Riruta suburbs, Uber was busy strategizing its expansion in the continent, launching services in Kenya’s tourist town of Mombasa (the coastal town which is a popular holiday destination for foreign tourists) and Abuja in Nigeria.
With the expansion, Mombasa and Abuja now become the 399th and 400th town covered by Uber, an innovative platform which connects drivers with riders in real time.
Uber-affiliated taxis provide an affordable, safe and reliable way to for passengers to get across to their respective destinations, even though the firm has recently been faced with issues around customer safety in various towns including Kenya.
Nate Anderson, acting GM for Uber Kenya said: “We’re really excited to be launch Uber in Mombasa. Giving locals and visitors in Mombasa an affordable, easy and flexible choice to move around the city safely and reliably.”
Kagure Wamunyu, Operations Manager for Uber Kenya said: “For those who don’t know, Uber moves around millions of global citizens every day offering affordable and reliable rides at the touch of a button. By offering a friendly and reliable complement to existing transport options, we can help improve urban mobility in Mombasa, reduce traffic congestion and the environmental impact of vehicles at the same time.”
Uber has unique benefits to the client compared to conventional taxis. A client can start the Uber app from anywhere and wait safely for the car to arrive. That means no standing on the street to hail a cab or struggling to find the nearest bus stop late at night. When a driver accepts a client’s request, s/he sees the driver’s first name, photo, and license plate number. The client can also check whether other customers have had a good experience with him or her. Conversely, the driver can also see the client’s first name and rating. Both the driver and client can also contact each other through the app if there is any confusion around pick-up details.
Ebi Atawodi, GM for Uber Lagos said: “We’re really excited to be launch Uber in Abuja. Uber gives the people of Abuja an affordable, easy and flexible choice to move around the city safely and reliably.
