Kisumu’s LakeHub has been selected by US State Department to host Fishackathon 2016, a public-private partnership that aims to capitalize on the expansion of mobile phone and internet use across the developing world to address sustainable fishery challenges.
This 48-hour event, set to run from Friday April 22 to Sunday April 24, will see participants interacting with hackers from 40 other cities globally from Atlanta to Kuwait City during what has been dubbed the “Earth Day Weekend.”
The annual Fishackathon event calls on coders and science enthusiasts from all around the world to come together to create new applications and tools for use on mobile phones and other devices, which can help fishers work smarter and more safely in sustainable fishing.
The Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships organized the inaugural Fishackathon around the Secretary’s Our Ocean conference in 2014. The 2014 Fishackathon took place at aquariums and tech hubs in five cities across the United States, and the 2015 event expanded to twelve cities around the world.
The 2016 Fishackathon will be held in over 40 cities internationally. Apart from Kisumu in Kenya, other African towns set to host similar events are Accra, Ghana; Cape Town, South Africa and Lusaka, Zambia.
During the hackathon, volunteer coders, technologists, and designers will spend the weekend developing usable solutions to problem statements solicited from fisheries experts around the world. At the end of the hackathons, teams will present their work and an expert panel of judges will nominate a winner from each site, eligible for worldwide grand prizes.
