AFRINIC to elect new board members, nomination deadline is April 30

The African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC), which was in mid 2005 accredited by ICANN as the fifth Regional Internet Registry, is set to elect new board of directors at its forthcoming AGM in Botswana.

According to AFRINIC’s bylaws, 3 board seats are up for renewal. These are Northern Africa (currently held by Haitham el Nakhal), Western Africa (currently held by Sunday Folayan) and the Non-geographical slot (currently held by Aminata Garba).

“We hereby announce that the 2016 Call for Nominations to the AFRINIC Board of Directors is now open. To nominate yourself or a person of your choice, please complete the nomination form available here. 2016 Nomination Period closes on 30th April 2016 at 20:00 UTC,” reads the AFRNIC announcement, adding that any suitably qualified person residing in one of the above regions can be nominated (for that sub-region) provided they comply with the requirements in Section 13 of the by-laws.

Nominees need to have participated in at least two AFRINIC events (whether physically or online) in the past three years and have at least five years professional experience in an area relevant to AFRINIC activities, such as Internet Resource Management, ICT, policy development, finance, audit and HR management.

“It is expected that proposed candidates should be able to attend the upcoming AFRINIC-24 Meeting, taking place in Gaborone, Botswana, in person on the day of the election, 9th June 2016, where they will have an opportunity to introduce themselves to the members and make a short presentation during the Annual General Members Meeting (AGMM)…” it further adds.

AFRINIC was incorporated in Mauritius in 2004 after a selection of potential host countries, the founders decided that the Board would consist of elected representatives from the six identified sub-regions in Africa (Northern, Western, Central, Eastern, Indian Ocean and Southern). The organisation’s are dispersed in South Africa (Technical operations), Egypt (Backup and disaster recovery) and Ghana (Training coordination).
