Since mid last year when Tom Omariba quietly – even though some claim under controversial circumstances – quite his position as MD of MTN Business Kenya, there has never been sufficient details about his replacement.
Immediately and for sometime after the departure of Omariba, the firm’s technical manager doubled up as the country lead, with others even speculating that he could possibly be confirmed to take over the vacant position.
(TOP: Kennedy Chinganya, MD, MTN Business Kenya).
However, this seems not to have happened as later that year, MTN Business Kenya’s head office in South Africa decided to send over one of its execs – Kennedy Chinganya – to come and oversea the Kenyan operations, though in an acting capacity.
But now, it looks like a decision has been made to have Mr Chinganya assume the role on permanent basis.
This is more so because a media release sent out by MTN Business Kenya’s PR agency announcing a new partnership with SMEasy refers to Mr Chinganya as “Managing Director” without clarifying whether he’s still holding the position in an acting capacity.
MTN Business Kenya’s former MD, Mr Omariba served the company from its founding days when it’s still called UUNET Kenya in 2001 before it was acquired by MTN Group leading to the rebrand to MTN Business Kenya.
He rose from Chief Accountant to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) before assuming the role of MD of MTN Business Kenya after the acquisition by the new investors and eventual departure of previous MD Geoffrey Shimanyula who left the firm and headed to Onecom. Mr Omariba’s LinkedIn profile has not been updated since his departure.
Mr Chinganya, from his LinkedIn profile, was previously the GM for Finance at MTN Group’s Enterprise Business Unit. Prior to this, he worked at Microsoft and IBM South Africa.
