Social Media Day – #SMDayKE – marked at Nailab

Kenyans yesterday joined the world in celebrating the annual Social Media Day with a call on users of the various networks to exercise online freedom with responsibility.

The celebrations which targeted several counties through workshops on responsible use of social media coincided with the launch of the 4th Edition of the Olx Social Media Awards (SoMA 2016) last evening in Nairobi at the ICT incubation centre, Nailab.

Speakers at various forums held to celebrate the day were united in calling on social media enthusiasts to make good use of social media to transform the society through generation of content that is beneficial to their followers. The theme for year’s Social Media Day was Freedom with Responsibility.

Acting CEO ICT Authority Robert Mugo, OLX Kenya Country Manager Peter Ndiang’ui and Social Media Awards (SoMA) Director Mr. Martin concurred misuse of the networks to spread hate speech would be a recipe for ethnic divisions and chaos especially in the run up to next year’s general elections.

Mugo said this year’s celebrations targeted the counties through workshops aimed at empowering the public with skills to harness social media for social and economic development.

“The counties can effectively use social media as a tool for social transformation by maximizing on the social and economic value of the Online interactions to improve livelihoods and enhance harmony among various communities,” he said.

The counties that participated in the social media workshops sponsored by global ICT giant through Livity Africa were Kisumu, Nyeri, Bomet, Kajiado, Nairobi, Nakuru and Kiambu.

The Social Media Day is a huge event celebrated annually on June 30th and offers the Online community an opportunity to learn and network as industry thought leaders share their insights.

The annual Olx SoMA, whose title sponsor is the online classified service Olx Kenya, have been held since 2013 to reward outstanding contributions in social media.

This year, the scope of the Awards whose theme is: Transforming Lives, has been widened to include new categories such as Agribusiness. Other sponsors are mobile service providers, Safaricom, ICT Authority, PRC, Trinc Media, Property Reality Company (PRC) and Livity Africa.

Kenyans can participate in the Awards by nominating individuals and organisations that have made good use of social media to impact society positively by through the website.

Commenting on the Awards, Ndiang’ui said: “Social media can be used to transform lives through generation of content that helps people to maximize Online opportunities for growth in sectors with huge potential like agribusiness, which Olx as an online classified service has put alot of premium in to spur economic growth from the grassroots level.”

 Muli said the Awards offer social media enthusiasts a platform to celebrate responsible use of social media to transform lives through generation of useful content.

Every year we strive to make SoMA more useful and relevant to the Online community by identifying gaps and realigning the categories in line with the latest trends in the local social media landscape,” he said.
