MTN Cameroon extends 4G network coverage to additional towns

MTN Cameroon has extended its 4G coverage to other areas including the cities of Bafoussam in the West Region, Limbe and Kumba in the South West Region of the country.
Already, 8 major cities – representing 53% of the population – are benefiting from the 4G LTE network’s faster internet connectivity. Cameroon’s Adamaoua Regional capital city, Ngaoundere, will be covered in the near future.
According to a post on MTN Cameroon’s Facebook page, the extension of the operator’s next generation 4G technology to these localities barely two months after the seaside tourist town of Kribi in the South Region, and six months after its initial launch, confirms the MNO’s commitment to provide Cameroonians with the tools needed to access the new digital world.
MTN Cameroon has invested over 60 billion FCFA (US $102 million) in its network in under one year.
Commenting on the expansion, MTN Cameroon CEO, Philisiwe Sibiya said: “At MTN, we are conscious that the telecommunications sector is today a sustainable development catalyst in Cameroon. As the leader of this sector and an African company committed to contribute decisively to the development of telecommunications on the continent, we understand that new digital world technologies are key to instill the impetus necessary for future growth, and intend to contribute significantly in this regard. It is for this reason that we launched the first 4G LTE network in Cameroon in December 2015. Today, 8 major cities are covered by this technology, namely, Yaounde, Douala, Buea, Bamenda, Kribi, Bafoussam, Kumba and Limbe.”
“Before the end of the month our customers in Ngaoundere and Garoua will be able to benefit from MTN’s 4G LTE network. We are proud to be a major driver of this digital transformation through the provision of infrastructure like the WACS optical fibre landing station, 4G technology, as well as innovative products and services which are revolutionising the way Cameroonians work, play and live. This, while enhancing the competiveness of local businesses and unlocking the potential of the country as a digital hub in the Central African sub-region”.
MTN Cameroon renewed its licence in March 2015 with the right to exploit the most advanced technologies, making Cameroon one of the few countries in the world to deploy 3G and 4G LTE technologies within the same year.
Today, roughly 53% of the population of Cameroon is covered by its 4G LTE network that meets international standards with plans to progressively extend it to other parts of the country in future.
