Econet Media has announced that it has acquired the exclusive English language rights to all live Aviva Premiership Rugby matches for Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) for its Kwesé Sports branded platforms. The deal also gives Kwesé Sports the non-exclusive rights to the English-language weekly highlights programmes across the same region as well.
In total, Econet Media’s Kwesé Sports plans to broadcast more than 100 matches per season, including on its satellite and internet based services as these are launched.
Dominic Hayes Premiership Rugby’s Commercial Director said: “Aviva Premiership Rugby has never been a more attractive proposition to broadcasters all over the world and we are enthusiastic about our dynamic new partnership with Kwesé Sports. We have just enjoyed a compelling year, with Saracens achieving a memorable Aviva Premiership and European Champions Cup double and we anticipate that next season will be the most competitive season in our history.”
In addition, CEO of Econet Media Joseph Hundah says: “We are very pleased that we have concluded this exciting agreement and that the action and energy of Aviva Premiership Rugby will be available on our Kwesé Sports platforms in the future. We continue to grow our sports line-up as an essential component of the different products we are developing and are focussed on ensuring a diverse range of sport is showcased.”
Meanwhile this latest announcement marks another milestone for Econet Media and its Kwesé Sports brand. To date, the company has inked agreements with English soccer’s powerful Premier League, America’s fast-paced NBA, Spain’s prestigious Copa Del Rey as well as with Cricket Australia, the mixed martial arts driven Extreme Fighting Championship and most recently, with leading UK sports promoters MatchRoom Sport.
The English Premiership Rugby, launched in 1997, features 12 teams which compete in 22 games before one ultimately takes the title and the trophy.
