Airtel Kenya’s PR exec Jesse Kisenya set to leave the telco

Airtel Kenya’s PR and Communications executive Jesse Kisenya is set to leave the Mombasa Road-based telco at the end of this month. Kisenya has been with Airtel Kenya since June 2012, having joined the firm as a Corporate Communication Assistant.

He served in that role till October 2013 when he assumed the position of Communications Executive.

His departure comes about 6 months after his colleague in the same Communications Department, John Musonye, was included in the staff layoff effected by the firm in mid January this year.

Already, Airtel Kenya has initiated the process to identify and pick Jesse’s replacement. On July 12, the telco put out an online advert for the position on LinkedIn, stating that the successful applicant would be reporting to the Legal and Regulatory Affairs Director.

“Some of the responsibilities include: execution of Public Relations strategies, goals and objectives to enhance, sustain and build equity for the Airtel brand; manage the profiles and media portfolio for the company leadership as well as review and update the company’s website and … lead on the brand asset project – “Airtel Rising Stars”, states the advert.

In January last year, Airtel Africa announced that the merger of its Public Relations and  Corporate Social Responsibility with that of Regulatory and Legal Affairs into a new Corporate Affairs unit, currently led by Dick Omondi, who also became the firm’s Corporate Affairs Director. This means that the Kisenya’s replacement will be reporting to Mr Omondi.

A source at the firm stated that over 30 people had submitted their applications for the position, but this number has since been reduced to about 5 candidates who will be called for interviews and considered for the role.

As for Kisenya, his next destination is still undisclosed, though rumours have it that he’s headed to a fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) vendor who’s identity is also still unknown.
