Corporate Talk loses Microsoft PR account to Grayling

After about 2 years of partnership, Microsoft has changed its PR agency from Corporate Talk Kenya to Grayling, a relatively new firm in the local scene but with a global footprint.

Apart from Kenya, Grayling has operations in Algeria, Angola, Ghana, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tunisia and Zimbabwe.

Before moving to Corporate Talk, the Microsoft account was being handled by two agencies – with Tell-Em PR being in charge of the corporate and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or Corporate Social Investment (or CSI as many firms currently prefer calling such programmes or initiatives) which include Microsoft 4Afrika and Microsoft Philanthropies while H&K Strategies handled Microsoft Devices (formerly Nokia). But the two units were later merged when Corporate Talk won the account.

For Corporate Talk, it’s not just the Microsoft that has taken a walk. The Wilson Airport-based communications firm has not managed to keep a number of IT clients as well.

By the beginning of this year, the firm – founded by former TV news anchor Ephie Hunja before being sold to current owners led by Graham Shaw (chair of British Chamber of Commerce) – had a good number of IT and tech firms in its client roster including sports betting firm Betway, SimbaNET, Fintech, Kenswitch, Solar Century and TechnoServe even though the contracts were almost coming to an end.

But things seem to have taken a turn for the worse following the departure of former CEO Lilian Wood wholeft to form At First Communications. She has since been replaced by Timothy Muthaura.

Either Corporate Talk management never engaged with the clients to have the contracts renewed or the clients themselves decided to seek communication counsel and expertise from other competing agencies.

Thi is because none of the above mentioned firms are no longer being handled by Corporate Talk (the site is still under development) apart from Fintech and Kenswitch (which are part of the same group anyway).

Apart from PR, Corporate Talk advertising and media buying for DStv through DStv Media Sales. Its other affiliates include Broad Digital, Fireworks Advertising and Havas Media Kenya (Orange Telkom-Kenya’s digital agency).
