The Kenya News Agency is launching its online historical photos archive in Machakos during the Mashujaa Day celebrations period. The exhibition contains never-before seen images on Kenya’s history since they were taken dating back to the 1940s.
The Urithi portal, the first historical public portal, has a collection of over a million historical images in addition to videos and text documents gathered from the Kenya News Agency (KNA) and Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) archives a well as from museums. Through the portal, the rich repository of Kenya’s historical multimedia records will now be easily accessible to the public to view, buy and use.
The launch constitutes a street exhibition showcasing historical images of Kenyan heroes emanating from Machakos County.
The ICT Authority together with the Department of Information will launch the portal through a series of public awareness events from October to November 2016 in selected towns across the country including Machakos, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Muranga, Maralal and Nairobi.
The ICT Authority, through World Bank, has supported the Kenya News Agency to digitise the photo library at the agency.
