At the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP22) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Ericsson is demonstrating its commitment to addressing climate change. COP22, which is taking place in Morocco from November 7 to 18, represents an opportunity for the African continent, in particular to address climate challenges.
Research by Ericsson shows that ICT solutions could help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 15 per cent by 2030, which amounts to around 10 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) – or more than the current carbon footprint of the EU and US combined. All industrial sectors studied show potential for ICT-enabled reductions of emissions.

Given that more than 40 percent of the world’s mobile traffic is transported by Ericsson networks, the company is committed to serving the next wave of internet users in developing markets by making mobile broadband access more sustainable, affordable and accessible.

According to Ericsson’s projections, mobile broadband (3G or above) will cover more than 90 percent of the world’s population, leaping from almost one billion subscribers in 2010 to 7.7 billion subscriptions by 2021. ICT, especially mobile broadband, will be the essential infrastructure platform for the Sustainable Development Goals.
Ericsson’s ambition is to be a climate-positive company by offering a sustainable portfolio and helping to reduce societal emissions. During COP22, Ericsson will present the following innovative solutions:
- Stella Lux, a solar-powered electric car developed by Solar Team Eindhoven. Ericsson’s contribution is a navigation system that optimizes the vehicle’s route to make the most of prevailing weather and traffic conditions. The solar car is on display from November 7 to 10 in an external area in the Innovation Zone, and from November 11 to 14 in the Arsat Abdessalam Park.
- Ericsson Zero Site, developed in partnership with Philips, is a multi-application pole solution that combines LED lighting with connectivity. Five Zero Sites are installed in Marrakech.
Ericsson will also present the following demonstrations at its booth:
- IoT: Connected mangroves; connected water; connected vineyards
- Network & OBS (available only on Nov 9 & 10): Cellular for massive IoT + 5G videos; HDS Command Centre; Apcera Hybrid Cloud; ECM (VNF Lifecycle, Orchestration); Ericsson Expert Analytics
- Energy & Utility: Smart metering; IoT Accelerator; Smart City; Show IT 2.0, Google Glass for Grid control; Ericsson Expert Analytics
- Public Safety & Security: Disaster and emergency management; private LTE networks for disasters and public safety
- Transport: Smart parking; traffic management
Following the agreement reached at COP21 in Paris, it is expected that COP22 will be the ‘COP of action’. To that end, Ericsson is participating in several panel discussions:
- November 12 – Seminar on sustainable cities in the Moroccan Pavilion. Ericsson speaker: Rachid Chihani
- November 14 – Low Emissions Solutions Conference hosted by the Moroccan Government, which takes place within the main COP22 conference. Ericsson speaker: Matilda Gennvi Gustafsson
- November 16 – Women leaders and the global transformation summit under the high patronage of His Majesty the King Mohammed VI. Participation of Naida Echahed
- November 16 – UNFCCC Momentum for Change award ceremony. Ericsson “Connected Mangroves” is one of the winning solutions. The award will be received by Supriya Prasannan and Matilda Gennvi Gustafsson
- November 17 – UNFCCC Momentum for Change, presentation of ICT solutions, Connected Mangroves. Ericsson speaker: Supriya Prasannan
