Mobile apps are rapidly becoming the primary way in which we consume information. Time spent on mobile apps
now out weighs time spent on mobile web, as it brings forth a new means for consumers of digital services and products to interact with businesses while on the go.
The Mobile Africa 2015 study, conducted by GeoPoll and World Wide Worx in 5 Africa’s – South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Uganda – found that mobile internet browsing now stands at 40 per cent across these markets – Ghana: 51 per cent, Nigeria: 47per cent, South Africa: 40 per cent Kenya: 34 per cent Uganda: 29 per cent.
The Mobile Africa study further revealed the most common phone activity within the five African countries surveyed – 48% use Facebook; 45% send SMS; 41% listen to radio; 37% take photos; 36% use instant messaging; 32% play games; 13% use Twitter while 26% use their devices to download apps.
With figures from the Mobile Africa study indicating that 26 per cent of respondents from the 5 countries use their smartphones to download apps, StarTimes – being a leader in digital entertainment – has launched an Android app which gives its existing and new subscribers an alternative platform to enjoy its programmes.
