
Betty Mwangi-Thuo, who resigned as Head of M-Pesa at Safaricom in March this year, has now joined Britam as the firm’s Commercial Director.
Mrs Mwangi assumed her new role at the beginning of this month and has been charged with the responsibility to employ technology to integrate and develop innovative products for Britam’s insurance, asset management, pension, and real estate units.

“Betty will lead Britam’s commercial division whose focus is to maximise productivity through leveraging on key distribution channels to generate profitable business and drive innovation around products, markets and processes to improve customer experience,” Britam Holdings Group MD Benson Wairegi told Business Daily. “Her vast experience in the telecommunications and mobile telephony industry gives her a competitive edge to discharge this mandate.” he added.
Betty joined Safaricom in December 2007 as Head of Division charged with managing the telco’s new products unit comprising M-PESA business and GSMA projects. She was promoted to Chief Officer New Products Division in October 2008 with the additional responsibility for Safaricom’s Value Added Service which championed product innovation and new product roadmap.
Prior to joining Safaricom, she was Chief Marketing Officer at Afsat Communications, according to a post on Cruchbase.
In June 2010, Betty was featured by MCI (Mobile Communications International) as one of the top 10 most influential women in mobile globally and in August 2011 and 2013, she was recognized as one of the TOP 20 most powerful African Women in ICT by the ITNewsAfrica.
In December 2011, Betty was recognized for her contribution to Kenya’s ICT sector by President Mwai Kibaki who awarded her the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS).
