No series has managed to captivate viewers and build a global following like Game of Thrones. Not 24, not Narcos, not Queen of the South and not even my once-favourite series Revenge can hold a candle to Game of Thrones. And if you wish, you can even add Empire and Power to the list.
Game of Thrones, which made its debut on TV in 2011, was created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss from A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy books authored by George R. R. Martin. The series is set on the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos and chronicles violent dynastic struggles among the realm’s noble families for power as the other families fight for autonomy.

Being a book-to-screen adaptation, many fans of the novels were initially skeptical during the initial episodes that the series wouldn’t capture all the elements in the book. However, after watching a few episodes, they were soon won over, admitting that the producers behind Game of Thrones had delivered beyond expectation.
Just scan through the three comments below posted on IMDb by Game of Thrones fans in 2011 to see what I mean:
“There is enough brain-dead television. But once in a while a show comes along that transports you to another world and makes you believe in the magic of television again. Game of Thrones is one such show… It is complex, multi-layered, surreal, vibrant, imaginative and it draws your eye in to the surprising level of detail, from the sweeping vistas, to the narrow dungeons, from the beautiful castles and magnificent trees, to the contrasting landscapes…” – paulday98 from Australia
“As an avid reader, I am often disappointed by what is represented by the silver screen. I initially get excited to see one of my favorite series on the big screen, and eventually walk away disgusted. For whatever reason, most shows and movies that are based on epic book series absolutely butcher the original content… So when I saw the preview for “Game of Thrones” on HBO, I was immediately skeptical…” – Jschool03 from US.
“It’s probably safe to say, when dealing with a series of novels as beloved as The Song of Ice and Fire, the most scrutinized aspect of the T.V. adaptation will be how well it holds to the source material. I am here to confirm, as a fierce devotee to the books, that we have nothing to fear… While certain scenes play out differently in execution, the plot remains perfectly intact (so far)…” – psypeterson from Canada.
The series is now heading to its 7th season. However before this, those who missed the previous seasons of Game of Thrones now have an opportunity to also watch and catch-up on the epic show without skipping a single episode as all the previous seasons – 1 all the way to 6 – are all available on Showmax this month.
If you’re still not convinced that Game of Thrones is worth your time, look at some of the facts below about the series:
- It’s the most illegally downloaded show in four years running, which just goes to show how popular it has become since 2011. Remember my earlier point about no other show having a fan base and captive audience as large and global like Game of Thrones? At least I’m now vindicated.
- The Dothraki language was created just for the show and contains more than 3,000 words.
- George R.R. Martin revealed the ending of the book series to the show’s producers – D.B. Weiss and David Benioff – in case he does not live to finish the books. Martin is 68 years.
- Game of Thrones is one of most expensive shows on TV. It costs three times as much to make an episode of GoT as it does to make an episode of The Big Bang Theory.
- The series is filmed on three continents and in six countries that is United States, Croatia, Morocco, Malta, Iceland and Northern Ireland.
That is why I believe that for those who’ve just subscribed to the platform, this here is another way of utilizing your free 14-day trial voucher for the next two weeks till the end of July.
Enjoy your Game of Thrones binge session…
