Diego Gutierrez quits CEO job at Tigo Tanzania, moves to Vodacom Group




After more than 5 years at the helm, Diego Gutierrez has quit Millicom Group’s Tanzania subsidiary – Tigo Tanzania – and moved to a new position at Vodacom Group in South Africa.

From his professional profile, Gutierrez left Tigo Tanzania in July and has been at Vodacom for 3 months now where he is the Chief Officer for International Markets, overseeing the Group’s regional markets across Africa.

Tigo has in the meantime appointed Simon Karikari – the firm’s CFO – to act as the telco’s acting Managing Director as it looks for a substantive boss to lead the team.

Gutierrez, a Millicom Group veteran, joined Tigo Tanzania in early 2010 as the COO from Tigo Ghana where he held a similar role. After a year as the COO, he was then promoted to deputy GM, before becoming the CEO in March 2012. When he joined Millicom Group in mid 2008, he was made head of marketing for Tigo Africa before moving to Ghana after a few months as the COO of Tigo Ghana.

With about 25 million subscribers in Africa, Millicom’s Tanzania is the group’s biggest market with 11.7 million customers and a 4G network. The group’s operation in Chad has a subscriber base of more than 3 three million. In February 2017, Millicom sold its subsidiary in Senegal operations. The group’s other operation in Rwanda.
