Tecno SPARK: Why this is the best phone selling for less than Kshs 10,000

I’ve had two Tecno models in the past – the Phantom Z and Phantom 5. I’m still using the Phantom 5, almost 2 years since I got it and it’s still stable and in fairly good condition. That is if you overlook the worn-out case.

Because they were models targeted at the working population, the Phantom Z and Phantom 5 were all retailing at – and I assume still cost – above Kshs 20,000 even though they’ve been in the market for some time.

Then the Tecno SPARK was introduced in the local market last week. And I had the opportunity to be offered one for review, courtesy of online retailer Kilimall and the device vendor Tecno Mobile Kenya.

Unlike the previous models in the Phantom series which I’ve talked about above, the Tecno SPARK is targeted at a different market segment – college students – and retails at below Kshs 10,000. To be clear, the device is currently going for Kshs 9,999 on Kilimall.

But at that price, the Tecno SPARK comes with some incredible features – a 13MP back camera, 5MP front camera, 16 GB storage and a fingerprint sensor. Added to this is a free selfie stick and phone holder for the first 100 buyers to purchase the phone on Kilimall.

Below are the Tecno SPARK’s other technical specifications:

The Tecno SPARK, according to a review on Kilimall, is a “new line of photo-focused smartphones from TECNO, targeted largely at millennial youths, especially students who mostly have to live on a budget,” nothing that “the Spark has been termed the brightest smartphone yet.”

But that’s not all. Having used the phone since last week, I’ve been quite impressed by other features in the device apart from the camera – the preloaded apps.

There’s the Recharge King, an app which scans an airtime recharge voucher and loads to the respective mobile number (remember the Tecno SPARK is a dual SIM device). This thereby saving you time as you don’t have to scratch the card then key in the digits onto the keypad to load the value. The app however detects both new and used scratch cards, so you won’t get away with loading used cards.

Then there’s the Micro Intelligence app through which you can choose how to use the phone – from choosing how to pick (and not pick) calls, take screenshots, how to close (or open) the screen and play music among other functions.

And lastly, though I should have mentioned this earlier, is the fact that even though the Tecno SPARK has a brief user manual within the box, the more detailed version of the manual comes installed in the device as an app. The 18-page manual takes the user through the process of using (including how to take pictures and enable Wi-Fi capabilities) and how to look after the phone.

These, and other features and specifications, contribute to make the Tecno SPARK a very good bargain when it comes to an affordable but quality smartphone. For the device is not just ideal for the college-going students – the target segment – but even others outside of this group. That’s why we urge you to visit Kilimall and grab the SPARK before the offer period ends mid this month. And enjoy Tecno’s 13-month warranty in the process.
