Topyster Muga, who was until end of March this year the head of Airtel Money in Kenya, has been selected among this year’s Techwomen Emerging Leaders.
TechWomen is an Initiative of US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ (ECA) mission is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchange that assist in the development of peaceful relations.

Ms Muga, currently the Senior Director in charge of Financial Inclusion for sub-Saharan Africa at Visa, is advocating for the socioeconomic financial inclusion of women in Kenya and several other African countries.
As one of the Techwomen Fellows (or Mentees), she looks forward to keep “pushing the Tech Women agenda and other relevant initiatives through the knowledge, skills, experience and networks gained from the her participation to ensure that citizens in Kenya and Africa at large currently excluded are included and given access to technological advancements at affordable costs.”
She hopes to develop skills as an objective thinker, a problem solver and a thought leader so as to formulate successful strategies in solving community problems.
“After participating in the TechWomen program, I intend to keep pushing this agenda and other relevant initiatives through the knowledge, skills, experience and networks I will have gained to ensure that citizens in Kenya and Africa at large currently excluded are included and given access to technological advancements at affordable costs,” she states her Techwomen profile.
TechWomen launched with 37 participants from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and the Palestinian Territories in June 2011. In 2012, the program expanded to include women from Tunisia and Yemen. In 2013, the cohort doubled in size with the addition of women from Cameroon, Kenya, Libya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Zimbabwe. In 2015, expanded to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The 2017 TechWomen program will include women from Pakistan.
Prior to her second career stint at Airtel in late 2014, Ms Muga had previously worked at Airtel Kenya from early 2005 till August 2011 after which she joined Vodafone Group as the Principal Product Manager for M-PESA.
Apart her, other Techwomen fellows from Kenya include Chao Mbogo, Charity Wanjiku, Janet Leparteleg and Ruth Kaveke.
