Five months since it rebranded from Orange Telkom Kenya to simply Telkom and introduced free Whatsapp access and free access to its 4G network, Telkom customers will no longer not have such privileges anymore.
In a message to subscribers sent on Thursday November 2, the telco stated that the free whatsapp and 4G services will be discontinued from tonight – November 2, 2017.
“Dear customer, FREE WhatsApp promotion ends today 2nd November at midnight, to continue enjoying FREE WhatsApp service, buy any Freedom bundle by dialing *544#,” stated free whatsapp termination notification.
The same wording was used in the 4G4FREE message. “Dear customer, 4G4FREE promotion ends on 2nd November at midnight. You can subscribe to Freedom bundles to enjoy FREE WhatsApp & FREE Telkom calls. Dial *544#.”
The free whatsapp promo had been running even before the rebranding and introduction of the 4G4FREE promo which was introduced immediately after the launch of Telkom’s 4G network in various parts of the country. To access and enjoy the 4G4FREE promo however, one needed to have a 4G-enabled device and be within the firm’s 4G network coverage area.
By discontinuing the free Whatsapp and 4G4FREE access, Telkom seems keen to move its subscribers to its recently launched Freedom Bundles which gives users free on-net Telkom calls, free WhatsApp, free SMS to any network and reduced off-net call rates of Kshs 2.
Apart from Freedom Bundles, Telkom users can also subscribe to the Xcell data bundles which range from 50MB at Kshs 49 (daily validity), 2GB for Kshs 250 (one week validity), 15GB for Kshs 990 (with a month validity period) and the 30GB bundle for Kshs 2,990 (also valid for a month).
