HMD Global has announced that the Nokia 8 smartphone is the official technology partner of Stormzy’s highly anticipated music video, Blinded By Your Grace Pt. 2 (BBYG).
This year has seen multiple tragedies rock the world, but in BBYG Stormzy wanted to show people standing tall, proud, and most importantly, together he reached out to his fans from all walks of life, religions and communities to join him and show a united front. All of them coming together to unite in a positive way, against a backdrop of more adverse times.
To emphasize the stories of the real people included in the video and show two sides to the story – Stormzy and the communities – moments of the music video were captured using the Nokia 8. Via the product’s unique Bothie mode, which allows you to simultaneously use the front and back camera to take a picture or video, fans there on the day captured exclusive behind the scenes footage from the shoot, making up parts of the video. This gave an honest account of the day, drawing people together from different walks of life and connecting their stories through the moving shoot.
This year has been a triumph for Stormzy; from launching his debut album GSAP, to his domination at this year’s MOBO awards resulting in a triple win, including Best Male Act and Best Album. His music video for Blinded By Your Grace Pt.2 – that launched on December 15, 2015 – is set to be no exception, continuing this year’s ongoing success.
Stormzy said: “The lyrics and what the song represents means a lot to me and I wanted to show a different side to my music. Having the platform to be able to bring people together to celebrate and share a moment through one of the biggest methods of uniting people – music – inspired me to share the stage with real people that continue to amaze me every day.”
I wanted to share both sides of the story, mine and theirs, through a song that is close to my heart and seeing people from every walk of life coming together to sing in the video, all in one place, has been an amazing experience. I found shooting through Nokia 8’s Bothie mode was a fun way to show both sides of the music video, documenting the real and raw stories from the day.
PekkaRantala, CMO at HMD Global, comments: “It has been an incredible experience to be a part of Stormzy’s new video, and the Nokia 8 is the perfect fit, enabling his fans to capture their experience of the day. Stormzy has had such a fantastic year and what he is doing through the video to Blinded By Your Grace pt. 2 perfectly illustrates our #UniteFor message; bringing people together in these disconnected and divided times with a message of hope and unity for the future.”
HMD encourages people to #UniteFor what they believe in, bringing their stories together through technology and its products. The partnership between Nokia 8 and Stormzy’s Blinded By Your Grace Pt 2 video was developed on these shared goals, with the overall outcome to come together and show unity.”
After garnering attention on the UK underground music scene via his Wicked Skengman series of freestyles over classic grime beats, Stormzy released his debut EP Dreamers Disease independently in July 2014. The British MC then went on to win Best Grime Act at the 2014 and 2015 MOBO Awards and came third in BBC’s influential Sound of 2015 list. He describes himself as “a child of grime “, influenced by the likes of Wiley and Skepta. He was the first ever unsigned rapper to perform on Jools Holland and also, the first unsigned grime artist to be nominated for a BET Award.
Subsequently, the 24-year-old rapper went on to win a plethora of awards including British GQ’s Solo Artist Of The Year this year and three MOBO Awards including Best Album and Best Male. His Mercury Prize nominated debut album, “Gang Signs and Prayer” went straight in at No.1 on the UK chart in February and has since reached Gold selling status. To date he has sold over 3-million records, worldwide.
