Mzamo Masito, ex-Vodacom PR executive, joins Google as director of marketing

Mzamo Masito, who has been Vodacom South Africa’s Managing Executive in charge of Brand and Communications since May 2013, has joined Google as its Director of Marketing for sub-Saharan Africa.
According to media reports, Masito joined Google in the first week of January and is based out of the firm’s Johannesburg office. In his new role, he will be leading the sub-Saharan Africa’s marketing team, aiming to sustain its momentum and capitalise on its successes in the region, increase access to the Internet, enhance locally-relevant products and content, and help people take advantage of the opportunities offered by the internet.

Apart from his current position, Masito lectures at the AAA School of Advertising and also serves on the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) advisory board.

Masito says he is excited about working for a company that is so committed to Africa and making a difference in people’s lives. “I spoke to a number of people before joining, and the consistent theme was Google’s humanity,” he adds. “The focus on teamwork, love of its people, and drive to achieve goals – this is why I joined the company. I hope while I am here I can channel my passion for Africa into the work we do,” he commented.

Masito joined Vodacom, a subsidiary of UK’s Vodafone Group, in May 2013 as the Managing Executive in charge of Brand and Communications. Between September 2014 and January 2015, he served as Vodafone’s head of Global Brand Engagement, a position which took him to the telco’s London office. He also headed the firm’s Segment Marketing unit from May 2015 to March 2016.
