Mary-Anne ‘Kui’ Kinyanjui, who has been the head of corporate communications at Safaricom for over 3 years now, is set to leave the firm in March. From Safaricom, Kui is set to join Wikimedia Foundation as the VP of Communications from March this year.
Kui’s appointment to Wikimedia Foundation was announced in January 2018 by Katherine Maher, the organisation’s , Executive Director.

And in a bid to avoid a situation where the position would be vacant in her absence, the telco has already announced the vacancy on LinkedIn, urging qualified candidates to submit their applications for the role.
Kui currently heads the telco’s PR and Communications unit which has a total of 9 staff members. Among the other members of the team are Wachira Kang’aru formerly an editor at Daily Nation newspaper), Bryan Wesonga (who previously worked at Microsoft and MediaMax, owners of K24 TV) and Dennis Mbuvi (who began his media career at CIO East Africa magazine before moving into PR at Tell-Em).
And in the 9-member team – which includes Kang’aru, Wesonga and Mbuvi – Kang’aru is the most senior (after Kui), meaning that should Safaricom decide to fill the position from within the organisation after her departure, he is most likely to assume the new role.
In late October 2014, Kui left IBM (where she used handle external relations for the company’s hardware unit for Africa and the Growth Markets, covering a total of 150 markets) after a three-year stint and joined Safaricom as Senior Manager, Corporate Communications.
Prior to IBM, she worked at Nation Media Group as an ICT reporter for Business Daily, covering trends and news in the sector. Kui has also previously worked at Ogilvy PR East Africa, where she primarily handled technology and FMCG clients, as well as PC World, where she served as editor.
