You will now have your items delivered to your home – or office premises – free of charge when you buy from Jumia. Yes, Jumia has this week announced that customers who order products with the ‘Jumia Express’ tag within Nairobi will have their orders delivered free of charge.
The development comes four months after Jumia announced that products bearing the ‘Jumia Express’ logo would be delivered to clients the next day after an order is placed on the platform. But now, the online retailer has now made it even better for customers by adding another benefit: free delivery.
In late September last year, Jumia announced that all products on the site with the ‘Jumia Express’ logo would be delivered next day in Nairobi, a day faster than normal in other parts of the country. The move was meant to make online shopping as seamless as possible for customers.
And this week, Jumia has made it even better for its Nairobi clients by announcing that it is now offering free next day delivery for customers in Nairobi through the ‘Jumia Express’ service.
In the latest announcement, Jumia stated that orders placed for products with the “Jumia Express” tag (formerly Jumia First) will be delivered the next day in Nairobi for orders of at least Kshs 4,000 and placed before 2pm.
The Jumia Express service covers products which are stored in Jumia warehouses, then picked, packed and shipped by Jumia after an order is placed. They differ from other products (or items) sold on the platform which are dropped off to Jumia by vendors when orders are placed.
“We will continue to invest in customer and vendor experience in 2018. This started to pay off in 2017, and has led to a strong start in 2018 with over 100% growth in sales compared to last January. The Jumia Express tag is a promise we make to customers for Free Next Day delivery. Today, this is available for customers in Nairobi only, but over time we hope to expand this to cover all major cities in Kenya. The service offers vendors the ability to sell hassle free, and to maximise their sales volume, as customers increasingly look for Jumia Express products,” stated Sam Chappatte, the Jumia Kenya MD.
Over 50,000 items are currently covered by the Jumia Express service including: Groceries, Fashion, Smartphones, TVs and Home Appliances.
Focussing on smartphones, the 2017 e-commerce trends report compiled by Jumia noted that there was “an upward trend in smartphone sales from 2014 to 2016, with over 200,000 units sold in 2016 on Jumia. However, the report stated the sales were “heavily concentrated in urban areas, with 65% of the Jumia’s smartphone sales concentrated in Nairobi.”
Unilever, Binatone & Saturn are among suppliers in Kenya whose products are being fulfilled by Jumia Express.
The service is available to Jumia’s vendors at a moderate cost, and is being increasingly sought out as it is linked with higher sales and saves warehousing space.
The free delivery offer within Nairobi comes at a time when the online retailer is increasingly striving to make online shopping as seamless as possible for customers by providing them with convenience during their shopping.
And the efforts are paying off as many Kenyans are embracing e-commerce. Traffic on the Jumia website increased by 28% over the last year with an average of 3.4 million people visiting the website monthly, or the equivalent of 11% of Kenya’s internet users visiting the Jumia portal every month.
For now, the Jumia Express is only available to Kenyan vendors within Nairobi while products coming from abroad on the Jumia Global program will continue to take between 10 to 12 days to be delivered.
Now, why not dash to Jumia Express and order an item and take advantage of the free delivery offer within Nairobi?
