After PesaPal, Telkom Kenya adds iPay option for MPESA airtime purchases

Telkom Kenya subscribers now have an additional pay bill number to use when making airtime purchases via Safaricom’s MPESA platform.

Initially, subscribers could only use the 220220 paybill number for PesaPal – which is also used to purchase Airtel Kenya airtime – but now, the telco has entered into a deal with iPay to process airtime purchases from MPESA via the 510800 number.

Airtime purchases via mobile money platforms is an option that comes in handy for most subscribers, enable users to top their accounts when it’s either impossible to purchase the same from outlets or in instances where one finds themselves in an area where a particular telco’s scratch cards are not available.

To encourage people to use the new iPay 510800 number, Telkom Kenya informed subscribers via a text message that they would be awarded a 100% bonus for every airtime purchase via MPESA using the code. However, I used iPay number to top up my line but got only the value purchased, with no bonus added.

iPay is a payments processing solution provider and payment gateway for Africa. It incorporates M-PESA, VISA, Mastercard, Kenswitch, Airtel Money and eLipa wallet modes of payment. The firm has packaged the commonly used bank debit card, credit card and money transfer systems into an online/point-of-sale transaction processing gateway that allows clients to receive payments off their website or even within their physical shop.
