Naim Bilal Yaseen takes over as KBC MD, replacing Waithaka Waihenya




Over a year since the exit of its former MD, public broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) has appointed a new boss. Dr Naim Bilal Yaseen has been appointed the new head of the corporation for a 3-year term with effect from March 20, 2019.

Dr Bilal’s appointment was announced in the latest edition of the Kenya Gazette by ICT CS Joe Mucheru.

naimbilal.jpgDr Bilal takes over from Waithaka Waihenya who resigned from KBC on October 25, 2017 following the expiry of his contract after having served in the position for 7 years as the MD and slightly over 3 years as the broadcaster’s Editor-in-Chief.

Waihenya joined KBC in November 2006 as the Editor-in-Chief before assuming the MD position in June 2010 when he succeeded David Waweru.

Before the appointment, Dr Bilal served as the acting Director of Information at the Ministry of ICT.

In a statement, ICT CS Joe Mucheru said the appointment is a culmination of a competitive recruitment process by the Corporation board of directors and the recruitment firm PWC as he emerged the best from a field of 35 candidates who had expressed interest in the job.

In his new role, Bilal will be expected together with the management team and the board, to develop a turn-around strategy to wake up the cooperation. He is also be expected to ensure the broadcaster becomes the leading choice of information and news for all Kenyans across its various broadcast channels. The new MD has been tasked to ensure that KBC ramps up its production capacity and works with local content producers to ensure quality Kenyans content is availed through its channels.

Prior to this role, Bilal has held a number of senior roles in the public and public sector. Previously, he served as Director of Public Affairs at the Judiciary. He was also a former Managing Editor at the Nation Media Group where he worked for 19 years serving in various roles, including being Mombasa Bureau Chief, News Editor and Head of NTV.
