
Tusker Mattresses has moved to enhance its strategic human capital base with the appointment of two Chief Officers in order to drive the retailers IT and Marketing portfolios. The C-suite appointments are part of the retailer’s commitment to deepen its professional management pool geared at guaranteeing world-class corporate governance.
The two are Sylvester Kiptoo, the Chief Information Officer (CIO), who has joined the supermarket chain from Kenya Airways and the immediate former Nairobi Bottlers’ Sales and Marketing Director Daniel Kipchumba Koech, who assumes the role of Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) in charge of Marketing, Business Development and Customer Experience.

“With the appointment, Mr. Koech, a seasoned commercial manager with broad leadership experience spanning over 17 years in commercial management and research both in the Service and Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Industries in Kenya will be taking charge as the Business Development lead for Tusker Mattresses, the retail chain that operates Tuskys Supermarkets and Mavazi Lifestyle Clothing stores, in Kenya and Uganda,” said Dan Githua, Tusker Mattresses Group CEO.
The appointments, he added, have been effected to help crystallise the new Tusker Mattresses Corporate strategy by providing leadership in business growth, entering new business frontiers, and the rollout of new customer reach channels including e-commerce.
In the new role, Koech will spearhead ongoing efforts to enhance the Tuskys and Mavazi stores instore customer experience, closely working with other functions to ensure seamless delivery of the Tuskys Customer Promise, which is to be the friendly supermarket.
Assisted by section heads managing the retailer’s Customer Experience, Corporate Relationships, Market Activations and E-commerce functions, Koech will also lead efforts to sustain the adoption of e-commerce and Omni channel strategies while embedding the same in all Tuskys and Mavazi customer interactions.
Kiptoo has 20 years of experience in Enterprise ICT delivery and management, including defining the company’s vision and Strategies covering IT Operations, Customer service delivery, Digital innovation, Purchasing and Supplies Management, leading high performing teams and financial Management and cost control. He brings a wealth of experience in digital transformation having worked as Head of IT operations at Kenya Airways.
Kiptoo served at national carrier Kenya Airways in various roles for over 18 years, joining in 2000 as the Systems and Applications Administrator and later rising to Head of IT Operations in late 2017.
Tusker Mattresses is one of the local corporates currently participating in a Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) incubation and acceleration programme dubbed called Ibuka. Through the programme, local companies are undergoing preparatory NSE listing paces. The paces in two phases (incubation and acceleration) involve the enhancing of their financial, technical, operational, commercial and strategic aspects of their businesses to enable the companies raise capital through debt and equity market.
