Judging panel to name 5 winning startups in EMERGING Mediterranean 2020 contest

Last month, EMERGING Mediterranean launched its call for applications to allow Mediterranean startups from Tech4Good – Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania – to compete and win one of the 30 places available for the BootCamp des 2 Rives.

The contest will be held from November 27 to 29, 2020 and will be strongly focused on the theme of resilience in the face of the current health and economic crisis.

After two days of workshop and conference sessions, 10 startups will be preselected to participate in the EMERGING Mediterranean Digital Conference on December 14, 2020 live from the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille.

EMERGING Mediterranean closed its call for applications last Friday at midnight . “We are more than happy by the interest our program has aroused among startups on the southern shore of the Mediterranean and we are delighted with the success we have encountered. We are particularly pleased with the large participation of women in our call for applications but also with the enthusiasm of Mauritanian and Libyan startups which, despite the particular difficulties they may experience on a daily basis in their country, have responded overwhelmingly ”, comments Samir Abdelkrim , founder of EMERGING Mediterranean and expert in African innovation.

In fact, in figures, the participation of Mediterranean startups represents:

  • 227 applications in total including 28% in Morocco, 24% in Algeria, 20% in Mauritania, 19% in Tunisia and 9% in Libya.
  • 74 applications made by women and 153 applications made by men
  • By project theme: 29 e-health startups, 30 mobility startups, 72 social and solidarity economy startups, 17 territorial resilience startups, 27 climate startups, 22 female entrepreneurship startups, 30 agritech startups .

Samir Abdelkrim specifies: “We are all the more happy with this success because the applications received were all of a very high quality and fulfilled all our criteria. The choice of the 30 to remember for the BootCamp was long and difficult! “

The 2 Rives BootCamp marks the start of this first edition of EMERGING Mediterranean. It will be held from November 27 to 29, 2020 between France and Morocco, in partnership with the Startup Factory of Casablanca and the campus of the Agence Française de Développement.

Through cycles of conferences – part of which will be accessible to all via Facebook Live from the EMERGING Mediterranean account on Friday November 27 from 4:15 pm – and hybrid activities combining live webinars and off workshops between young shoots and a dozen mentors and experts High-level including researchers, entrepreneurs and innovation professionals, this BootCamp will promote open-innovation between startups, researchers, institutions and key accounts.

Samir Abdelkrim adds: “The participating startups will have the opportunity to exchange with our mentors in order to receive as many tools and advice as possible to be resilient in the face of the global crisis they are going through. At the same time, this event will provide the opportunity for intensive 72-hour coaching sessions for the benefit of candidate startups, which will be selected at the end of a Pitch Session by an intermediate Jury . “

The 2 Rives BootCamp will thus end with the announcement of the 10 startups preselected to participate in the EMERGING Mediterranean Digital Conference. Initially scheduled for December 7, 2020 but postponed to December 14, 2020 due to the health situation, the EMERGING Mediterranean Digital Conference is the next big step in this first edition of EMERGING Mediterranean. As a reminder, it is at the end of this great event that the five winning startups will be selected. They will each receive a package comprising a grant of € 7,000, integration into the SIBC Acceleration Program, a two-day Full Pass for EMERGING Valley (April 7 and 8, 2021) , a Demo Day in front of a panel of impact investors and participation in Mediterranean Digital Dialogues.

“EMERGING Mediterranean, through the proposed package, both from a financial point of view and in terms of scaling up support, is an unprecedented program for strengthening the resilience of Maghreb startups, the only one to achieve this day to be so full. Through it, we are proud to support the Mediterranean champions of tomorrow, to help them be more resilient, to inspire future generations while strengthening the link and synergies between Africa and Europe. This is even more necessary at the present time in the current economic and health context ”, concludes Samir Abdelkrim.
