Huawei Mobile Kenya on July 5 announced that it would be launching the Huawei Band 6 in the market, with the unveiling coming at a time when there is a huge demand for wearable devices especially the fitness-related models.
Talking of demand for wearable devices, Counterpoint Research in late August last year reported that the global smartwatch market posted a healthy 20% revenue growth in the first half of 2020, even though shipments remained flat compared to the same period last year mainly due to the pandemic.
Counterpoint reported that close to 42 million smartwatches were shipped in the first half of 2020 as wearables continued to record greater demand as consumers globally became more health conscious.
Commenting on the competitive wearable devices landscape, Counterpoint’s VP of Research Neil Shah said that: “Huawei saw healthy volumes (of over 57% YoY), jumping to the second spot globally in the first half of 2020. Huawei benefitted from significant demand for its smartwatches, especially the Watch GT2 series in its home market China and Asian markets, with shipment volumes growing 90% in both the regions…”
OK, let’s now go back to the focus of the review and concentrate on the Huawei Band 6. Before it can hit the mass market (we have had a review unit since the day of the announcement), it’s (always) ideal to highlight some of the key features and specs of the Hauwei Band 6 which (in our perspective) make it a good (if not better) choice for the Huawei brand fanatics keen to acquire a new wearable device for their fitness-related and daily lifestyle activities. After the July 5 announcement, the device, the successor to the Huawei Band 4, has since July 12 been available on pre-order for Kshs 7,000 up until now. And from now, you can still buy the Huawei Band 6 for Kshs 6,999 from Amaya and get a 10% discount using this coupon code.

Because mobile devices have now become our daily lifestyle companion and a necessary tool when conducting business, it then follows that we use and rely on them most of the day. It then follows that we’d love our phones to stay and connected every time of the day to ensure that we’re efficient.
This is why battery life of mobile device is always crucial, even for a smart watch. Remember you can use the Huawei Band 6 to perform some functions of the mobile phone – like receive calls, read text messages and all.
And now, for those with active and even hectic lifestyles with no stops for relaxation in between, you can relax as the HUAWEI Band 6 offers an incredible 14 days of battery life for typical use, and approximately 10 days for heavy users. And remember that when you finally do run out of battery, you can get an equivalent of 2 days of use from just 5 minutes of charging time with the device’s magnetic charger.
Design and aesthetics
With the Huawei Band 6, you can choose from 4 different strap colours, each with their own individual aesthetic. Made from skin-friendly, UV-treated silicone, the straps are super-light and also dirt-resistant.
Just like in the Huawei Watch Fit, the Huawei Band 6 presents you with a huge variety of watch face designs to choose from, accessible through the HUAWEI Health (or Huawei Wear) apps. Once inside the app stores, you can then swap them out and choose the one which takes your fancy, whether a free or premium version.
We have already mentioned that digital devices have become our daily companions in our personal and business (or professional) lifestyles. And in this regard, the HUAWEI Band 6 is more than a health and fitness tracker, as it goes further to offer you a more convenient way to interface with your phone. Through the device’s 1.47-inch AMOLED FullView display, with a 148% larger viewable area, which is just a bit smaller than the Huawei Watch Fit’s display, you can view incoming calls and messages, get weather updates, control your music, and also take photos through your phone’s camera, all controlled from the wearable device on your own wrist.
Work out modes
Being a fitness-related wearable device, the Huawei Band 6 ships ready to help you with your daily workout routine and even assist you in achieving your overall fitness goals which key for healthy lifestyle. The device comes with up to 96 different exercise modes to choose from, and keep track of various aspects of fitness regimen. For easier analysis, all your collected data can be stored and examined in easy-to-read graphs, enabling you to then set your goals and chart your overall fitness journey.
Using the Huawei Band 6, you can activate your day by setting 3 daily activity goals – Steps, Hours Active, and Moderate-to-High Intensity Activity. The device will automatically keep a track of your progress via periodic rings and also provide you with motivating reminders and notifications when you’ve achieved your goals.
Monitoring and tracking features
The TruSeen 4.0 heart rate monitoring technology uses an optical lens and AI-based data processing to accurately monitor your heart rate 24 hours a day. When activated, you’ll then be alerted instantly when your heart rate drops below or rises above safe levels.
Hectic schedules have meant that we rarely manage to get sufficient rest and sleep. To overcome and even help you this, the Huawei Band 6 comes fitted with the TruSleep 2.0 feature which detects when you’re awake, and when you’re in one of 4 different sleep states – deep sleep, light sleep, REM and napping. With 96.3% improved accuracy, it records not only how much you’ve slept, but also your quality of sleep. Through this feature, 6 major sleep problems can be identified, and you’ll be able to receive over 200 sleep improvement suggestions.
Chronic low blood oxygen saturation, SpO2, can lead to fatigue, memory loss, and even brain and heart damage. For these reasons, you need to ensure that you always stay in the safe zone. And to assist you in this, HUAWEI Band 6 has a built-in SpO2 detection system that monitors your blood oxygen saturation all the time. If it drops to very low levels, the band will vibrate, enabling you to take some time out to breathe and regain your equilibrium.
