Safaricom Foundation donates Endoscopic Ear Surgery equipment to ODE-K for outreach programmes

Safaricom Foundation has handed over an Endoscopic Ear Surgery equipment worth Kshs 3.9 million to Operation Ear Drop Kenya (ODE-K) to support outreach programmes for the hearing impaired. The ceremony took place at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) during a free ear surgical camp which has been ongoing since Monday, 30 August.

The partnership aims to provide preventive, surgical and rehabilitative services to the hearing impaired Kenyans who are unable to access these services due to financial problems, unavailability of specialized services in their areas and lack of appropriately trained health workers.

At least 240 people in eight counties with hearing impairment are expected to have their hearing restored thus opening up their life opportunities. Over 80 patients have so far been reached in Nairobi, Kisii, Laikipia and Kisumu counties. The medical equipment will assist in performing technologically advanced operations in theatre as well as teach all theatre staff and students during rural surgical outreaches.

With a footprint in all of Kenya’s 47 counties, the Safaricom Foundation has so far implemented over 1,000 community projects, impacting over 3 million people, through the thematic areas of Health, Education, Environmental Conservation, Economic Empowerment, Water, Disaster Relief, and Arts & Culture.

The foundation’s current strategy builds on the strong history of results and partnerships and will contribute towards Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. The organisation leverages the power of innovation and technology to drive its projects forward; and offers a blend of grants, equity and ultra-low-cost loans to our partners.

Operation Ear Drop Kenya (OED-K) is a charitable non-profit making organization founded in 2003 to provide preventive, surgical and rehabilitative services to the hearing impaired Kenyans with emphasis on children from underprivileged backgrounds. OED-Kenya is dedicated to promote hearing health and education in Kenya.
